DEAD RIVER

GARY WALEIK

Something went wrong when I thought “This place is not for me”
I was pinned by three shots from a masked man across the street
It was the wrong place

Some say to leave the city is to defy gravity
And so I used a compass
To find a barren wilderness
It was a new place

Magnetic north gave a tug, drew me near
To water that flows just to make itself clear
Dead River

Give me a minute now and I will tell you what’s changed
But I thought I saw that gunman who was smitten by a jealous rage
Three shots with a ten gauge - pow pow pow pow

A flock headed north then south, flew into a building
A school of fish-like human beings broke ranks and fled downstream
Dead River
Give me a minute now

Beauty and beasts, friends and foes all live here
You’ve got to flow just to keep it all clear
