To roam free -
To be unencumbered
Slip away

For one night
By the lakeside
Elucidate

To be oneself again -
To run unfettered
Drift away

Retrogress
Slip into the water

Something's beneath the water's surface
Lady of the water, ripples on the shore
Run against the water lilies
I succumb to the temptation, footsteps
Into the cold blackness
And then I am gone

To exist -
To question all things
Suffocate

For one night
By the lakeside
Eyes open wide
(Cloaked in white
Watching for me)

To be whole again
Strong enough to fight
Bathe in starlight

For one night
Give in, curious
Slip into the water
(Hands find
Surround you)

Underwater constellation
Pinpricks of light
Try to see your face

Underwater hesitation
The air a flame in my lungs

I awake at the
First light of day
Soaked to the bones
Haunted by the ghost
Of whatever you were

I lose my way
Look out over the lake
Gentle ripples
Water lilies
Nothing more
