Winter is a Coloured Bird

Roger Wootton

Winter is a coloured bird
Fleeting silent through the sweet pure air
Chills the night but holds the word
Decrees by wind are secrets to the land
Which sleeps

The cold wind rushes
The ash will smear along
With mysteries, messages
And I know it's a hollow
Turned on, the land will awake
In winter
In winter

If I were a silent tree
I would yearn to be awake in winter
Although I know I can’t be free
At least I can exhibit all my earthy truths
But, but, but the tree sleeps

The wind respects his lands
This darkness is a sham
For 'neath the bark the sap is pulsing
But the tree does not breathe
In winter
In winter

Happy as the spring am I
The world awakes me when I'm tired
Latent energy released
Yonder by the winter’s eye
And the world can see her flourish

And if they turned off
They could feel her too
You don't know me
I don't know you
O Mother, you're a stranger
You're shaped with me, I'm your child

It's all in my mind
It's all in my mind
It’s all in my mind

And if they turned off
They could feel her
They could feel her
They could feel her
They could feel her
They could feel her
They could feel her
Feel her
