Strange Boy

Daniel Johnston

[Spoken]
Daniel Johnston? Well I met Daniel Johnston, um- I guess the first time I remember, I heard about him before, I, before I, uh, really actually met him. I knew, I knew that he was living with, with a, with a friend of mine, Scott. I'd heard, I'd heard the story about living with a carnival and all. Um, and I knew he had some very good gifts. And then I thought, well. And I knew that he was a cartoonist, and I knew he was trying to, trying to get- To- To be able to do more than that and make more of a career. So, um, I met him actually when he came to visit at the old house. And uh, at the time he had got a job for, at the Pizza Hut, and I thought, well that, y'know- And I was trying to encourage him to think about the job at the old house, cause at that very same time we also needed someone, but he didn't pay any attention because he already had a, had a, had a job at the old house, and I later found out the reason he wanted, he wanted that job was so he could eat lots of pizza. I guess it didn't work out that way. Um, after he started working, and he did start working at the old house, two weeks later. Um, I found out that he was a very creative, uh, and very unique individual. And he had a special ability to make me laugh, which, uh, is not that common. Um, and uh, related this, to some parts of his sense of humor, um. Cause we got to know each other, I saw the many talents that he had, and one of the things that I really enjoyed was his, uh, cartoons, and, and um, enjoyed saying write those, and draw those. Later I found out he wrote music and played songs, um, and was just a very creative guy, and, um, and had a lot of talent, and I would often hear him playing the piano, um, I'd heard a number of his songs, two or three, I guess, and enjoyed them, um, but this next song that uh, that I heard, um, 'Boy From West Virginia', 'A Weird Boy From Me From West Virginia', I don't know exactly what he's gonna title it but uh, think I titled it but I forgot the name of it, but uh, heh heh. Uh, and it's up-tempo and I liked that, I thought that was very good that um, that, had a happy sound to it, and uh, and it had a, it had, it had a good little, good little story, y'know, and I guess I can relate to that, that uh, but what the song was about, y'know I guess that's why I liked it, cause, I guess maybe I, and maybe everybody in a point of their life, uh, wants to fall in love. And um, and does every day I guess. Um- Uh, I think you'll like the song, I hope it touches you, like it does me, and, and I hope he can touch you, like he has me

[Verse 1]
When I saw you
I was frozen
I knew that I had already
Gone ahead and chosen

[Refrain]
I was in love with you

[Verse 2]
I see you act the same way
Whenever we get near
On the verge of tears
Darling now I fear

[Refrain]
I am in love with you

[Verse 3]
I tell you now
It's spooky for me too
Just to feel this way
I don't know what to do

[Refrain]
I am in love with you

[Verse 4]
I am a strange boy
I come from West Virginia
I've seen a lot of heart
And the avant-garde

[Refrain]
I am in love with you
