The Interest Of Time

Taylor Goldsmith

On the back end of a growth spurt
His red pants looked a little short
Telling me where and how his legs hurt
As we were walking out the door

I used to hate getting up early
Now I try not to make a fuss
My wife leaves for work at 7:30
And our kid never liked the bus

Keeping the sequence in line
Trying to gather my thoughts
In the interest of time
As if we know what it wants

I found the structure of an echo
Beneath the surface of a pool
All of the X's and all the zeros
The way a memory comes unspooled

Maybe time moves in more directions
In any moment of the day
All the contractions and extensions
In all the messes that we make

Keeping the sequence in line
Trying to gather my thoughts
In the interest of time
As if we know what it wants

He threw his backpack around his shoulders
Before he ran off to join his friends
He said "Love you Dad, see you later"
