The Grand Canal

[Verse 1]
Three months before the month of June
It was the month of March
When we set out from Dublin town
With a cargo of roasted starch
The skipper's name was "Robinson"
He guided the vessel's course
While I was the second engineer
The man that drove the horse

[Verse 2]
The ship she was a dainty ship
A slender ship was she
And though she shaped up like a barge
She wasn't called a "he"
I drove all over the land with her
From Tullamore to Kinnegad
How she could ride the surf with pride
Along the Grand Canal!

[Verse 3]
For more than forty years
There was no water in the sea
So the skipper got on his bicycle
To see where it could be
He hadn't gone away a year
When up there came a gale
So to keep the ship from gettin' wet
We hung it on a nail

[Verse 4]
Me father was a sailor too
And his before he was
He called me "Romping Molly Blue"
In honour of the horse
And I hope and pray my children may
Be like I was, enthralled
At the men and ships and mares who slip
Along the Grand Canal
