Introduction By Jimmy Lyons
[Intro: Jimmy Lyons, Don Ellis]
Thank you very much. You know in setting up our afternoons at Monterey, we have devoted one afternoon usually to exploring new forms in jazz. Twenty-five years ago we started a band down in Balboa Beach, Stan Kenton, and I don't think I've ever been as thrilled since then. So ladies and gentlemen, I would like to have you greet one of the most brilliant sounds in the big band business I've ever heard. The gentleman responsible for it, ladies and gentlemen, Don Ellis and his orchestra. Don Ellis.
Thank you Jimmy, and thank you. Just a couple words about what you're going to hear before we get started. Uh, the first number we have is, uh, one that's based in what we call the traditional nineteen, nineteen beats to the bar. Let me give you the subdivision here. It's three three two two two one two two two. Of course that's just the area code. That's the name of the piece. Thank you.
