Hourglasses

Jan Juránek

We are all hourglasses
There journey bountiful purple sands
Inside one half
And the other half - our knowledge
Is slowly being filled up
The bounties of the sands are
Energy, funk, salty tears & summer nights
Defiance and oddly unknown of prowess

The neck of the hourglass splits the sands
And devours all the sand's powers
& pushes it into the under dome
There knowledge has its timely home
And there, as time goes by
We lose our sight and senses
Surroundings change, as do our devices

Though it's a mutual process
Living and being lived
We make life and it makes us
All while in a definite hourglass

As the specs grow scarce in the upperdome
Our worries grow low
And our throats don't throw foam
We begin to know more of the end

We grow to know love, kindness, darkness
Sweet, sour, bitter and salty
All the while us - me and he
Or you and me - we begin to uncover
What lies there under our eyes
Roses of Rilke and many moons of late
We know yet refuse to stop resisting hate

And now, the final, honest hour comes
And only the universe - this of circumstance
May break the hourglass before it's due
So far no luck for me or for you

The purple shallow sands of youth
Swallowed up into a triangular spectrum
We are no longer clean and naïve and fearful
We grew fond of fun and remain cheerful
Even in the face of certain ends
We draw fresh velvet crushed curtains

The deed is done, the seed has grown
The tree has fallen into the unknown
The fruits of knowledge are a sweet confection
Forever feeding future with its true reflections
