Postcard #30

Jens Lekman

July 27th, 2015

In Bremen, Germany
I was booked to play a wedding
The morning after a text alerts me to the canceling
Of my flight and the resulting rescheduling
From the morning to later in the evening
And I lay there in bed, thinking of how to spend a day
And then I heard church bells ringing through the morning
Calling to the Sunday service from the cathedral and the other churches
And I follow that sound to St. Peter's Cathedral
Sat down in the pew with the Bremen people
And just listened

I didn't understand a word a priest was saying
My high school German could use some serious practicing
But just to sit there and hear the church organ
Echo through a summer morning
To feel tiny for a little while, to look up to the ceiling
Like you'd look at a starried sky
To ask that old question: where did we come from and where are we going?
The sadness of everything, the joy of everything
