Down The Tracks

Richard Clapton

Sometimes I don't know which side I'm on,
Left or right, or right or wrong,
I keep enlightened and I read the news,

But they write the news, just to keep you confused;
Here in the carnival all that survives,
Are the echoes of simple and happier times,
You make a dollar and you make a dime,
But I'm still searching for the simple life;

CHORUS:
Down the tracks -
You go hanging your head out the window,
Looking back -
As your train rushes on to tomorrow.

Your daddy he's an unhappy man,
You live a life he can't understand,
He keeps you down for your own protection,
But he's trying to hide his own fear of rejection.

Down the tracks -
You go hanging your head out the window,
Looking back -
As your train rushes on to tomorrow.

Everybody's out there talking that mainstreet jive,
Out on the street dancing for their lives,
All laughing and singing as they roll down the track -
They don't notice their past catching up real fast.
