The Devil in Paradise

Richard Clapton

It ain't rained up here for more than forty weeks,
It's been so long since those raindrops kissed the trees,
Now I watch my children run, in the fields around our home,
It's so hot up here that I can hardly breathe;

It's real country up here in the hinterland,
Everyday that mean ol' sun scorches the land,
I've got so much on my mind, and the riverbed's so dry,
I'm a prisoner of my own circumstance;

CHORUS:
When you find - there's a devil in paradise,
He will trick you and treat you and play dirty tricks with your mind,
'Til you're burning up with anger, holding back the tears,
Watching your castle of dreams crumble and disappear.

Every night I sit, my head down in my hands,
I just sit and wait to hear the weatherman,
It's the same thing every night - yes tomorrow's hot and dry,
Mother Nature's got me turning into sand;

Took a long time but, it's now become quite clear,
I had always thought the journey ended here,
You can search your whole damn life, but the road runs through your mind,
All the things we seek are hiding deep inside;

When you find - the devil in paradise,
He will trick you and treat you, and play dirty tricks with your mind,
'Til you're burning up with anger, holding back the tears,
Watching your castle of dreams crumble and disappear
