Different Story
That boy seems nice enough
It’s a shame he ain’t bright enough
Just not wrapped tight enough
On his way to death or glory
That girl seems fine to me
Seems to know her own mind to me
Kinda walks the line for me
In between some different stories
A different story written on the wind
A symphony of noise and beauty
Fill ourselves with wonder and speak of senseless things
And the song that tomorrow sings
Means the story starts again
A different story never ends
That girl might break ‘em up
Or that boy could make it up
Either way they’re waking up
Tell tall tales, shake some action
The city is a book for them
Everybody there looks like them
They know it’s up to them
To make themselves the main attraction
A different story written on the years
A testament of sound and fury
Keep it in the sunshine and water it with tears
And the fruit that the future brings
Means the story starts again
A different story never ends
The things we’ve seen, the hands we’ve held
Marks on the map and notes in the margin
Small print, tall tales, fables and faded flowers
The stuff of legend? Ha! - pure invention
The rumour mill, lies, fact and fiction
Sideways looks, secret glances
Whispers, yelps and news reports
The strangers met and the friends we’ve lost
The little kids watched Jackanory
The grown-ups have a different story
