The Summer of a Dormouse

Jof Owen, Peter Hobbs

Towards the back-end of the spring
I begin waking up again
I rub the sleep out of my eyes
Sitting my on tail and stuffing acorns in my cheeks
I'm waking up but everything looks so sadly familiar to me

I'm a funny little thing
Always trying to hide my feelings
I keep falling asleep
And I'm always surprised by seasons
And I watch as the spring suddenly turns into summer
While I sit lazily, stripping bark off a honeysuckle

I have to crawl away and hide
So I can be myself sometimes
'Cause I'm not like all the other mice
I guess I just get tired of everything so easily
And so it is I hibernate in winter and wake up in the spring

I've been fattening up
On hazelnuts and strawb'rries
And I'm packing my stuff
Up and putting it into storage
And I've emptied the fridge
And defrosted the freezer compartment
I've unplugged the TV
And I've changed into my pajamas

I'm a funny little thing
Always trying to hide my feelings
I keep falling asleep
And I'm always surprised by seasons
And I watch as the spring suddenly turns into summer
While I sit lazily, stripping bark off a honeysuckle

Towards the back-end of the spring...
