the Kakaju

James Cullinane

Gather around and listen good
Gonna tell you a tale of a deep, dark wood
And some children who - wouldn't listen to
Stories of the Kakaju

Many years ago when they built the town
They chopped the trees and burned 'em down
To make room for - all the shops and stores
And in the middle of the woods
A creepy, crooked tree house stood
So they burned that too, 'cause they never knew
Could be the home of the Kakaju

The old folk told them what they knew
About the legend of the Kakaju
How it guards the trees the birds and bees
But the woodsmen only laughed
Should we get its autograph
What harm can it do - does it know kung fu
Not scared of the Kakaju

But when the woodsmen did return
To get on with their slash and burn
Some disappeared - to who knows where
So they left those woods alone
It became a no-go zone
Put up a big fence too for folk like me and you
To keep away from the Kakaju

Years went by and the town it grew
As did the legend of the Kakaju
So when the fence fell down, some kids in town
Ignored what the stories said
And set off for the woods instead
Could be fun to do - and they were hoping to
Catch a glimpse of the Kakaju

The children clambered through the fence
The deep, dark woods were pretty dense
Vines everywhere tore at their clothes and hair
Suddenly down the track
Over near the native flax
Something moved - do you know who
Could it be the Kakaju

They told their friends they'd stay the night
But all the kids took off in fright
Back through the woods, to the safety of their neighbourhoods
Clothes were torn here and there
Bumps and scratches everywhere
Someone even lost their shoe - go back for it - would you
And maybe meet the Kakaju
Would you wanna meet the Kakaju
