Ashes

Can you pick up the pieces for me?
Covered in the ceiling and debris
The hot memories are now embers
The house burning I’ll always remember

We were sitting in the street
8 at night
The neighbors gathered around
And held me when I cried
My mom and dad hugged me
My cats in the car
As the house started collapsing
So did the space in my heart

Can you pick up the pictures for me?
Coated in ash and debris
Just yesterday the house was bolstering
Now my living room is smoldering

I was sitting on the sidewalk
Along with everyone on the block
All I could do was sit and watch
As the hoses turned up a notch
My dad held me in his arms
My cats eyes wide
The fire will never be extinguished
With the tears I cried

I’ll never forget the lady with the blanket
Helped us and we were grateful to take it
I’ll never forget the lady with the water
She is somebody’s proud daughter
You didn’t know us
But you knew we were in need
I’ll never ever forget you
Or the kindness you speak

All because of a faulty chimney flue
