Me and Mine
The boy leaps from his bed
Comes bounding down the stairs
The sun's not even up yet
He doesn't even care
And I
Yes, I was like that once
He says, "Daddy, it's today"
There is this promise that we made
And I open my eyes slowly
And I see his smiling face
And I
Yes, I was like that once
So I put on my shirt
And my jeans and my boots
And I say, "Boy, I love you"
And he knows that I do
He says, "Pops, can we stop?"
For breakfast on the way
I say, "Son, I'll brew the coffee
And I'll make you some eggs"
And I thank God
That he
Is mine
The girl calls from the yard
"Daddy, daddy, come and see"
She's perfecting her front handspring
And she is showing off for me
And I
Yes, I was like that once
So I pull off both my boots
And I raise up both my hands
Then I show her I can do one, too
And she laughs hard 'cause I can't
And I
I was like that once
She says, "Dad, you're like ridiculous"
I say, "That's kinda my job"
And she kisses me on my cheek
Then she's back out in the yard
And she is wild
And free
And mine
Oh, I thank God
That she
Is mine
The woman's on the porch
She says, "Husband come and sit"
And we look up at the stars
And we talk about our kids
And I
"I was like that once," she says
And she says, "Do you remember
Just how terrified you were
Before our babies came
How you were shaken to the core?"
And I
I was like that once
And she says, "Oh love
Look how blessed
You and I've become"
And I take her hand and say to her
"You'll always be the one"
And I'm still mystified
That you
Want to
Be mine
Oh, I thank God
That you are mine
And I thank God
That he is mine
And I thank God
That she is mine
And I thank God
For me and mine
