MONKEYS MASTER

Graham Bell

Monkeys

I’ve been standing here for ages
Watching the monkeys in their cages
And there’s one that comes right up to the wire
He’s looking hard at me
In his eyes I see confusion
Maybe to him I’m just an illusion
He’s trying to figure out why he’s in the cage
And I’m the one that’s free

When you stop to think about it
He’s got the rough end of the deal
We only put him in a cage because we can
We never once thought to ask him how it feels

Is there someone, something out there
Observing us to see how we fare
Could it be that we’re just
Specimens in some galactic zoo?
Without cages, still we’re fenced in
By those rules of our own invention
When you look into our eyes
You’ll see confusion too

I guess its open to discussion
Who’s got the rough end of the deal
Why do we shut ourselves in cages of convention
Far away from the scary and the real?

I’ve been standing here for ages
Watching the monkeys in their cages
And now I wonder if I know
Just who is really watching who
There’s a sadness about those faces
Do they remember exotic places
Roaming through the forest
Where life is beautiful but brutal too

What of our dreams and our ambitions?
Why do they falter and decay?
Something inside us always tearing at the pieces
of the puzzle that might set us free one day
